Countdown to Art Basel 2010

Posted by Brittany on November 29, 2010 in Graphic Design

You got that right! In 4 days, I’ll be in Miami Beach for Art Basel. Not only is it exciting because of all the art in the convention center and satellite galleries around it, but because it becomes a mecca for artists, designers and enthusiasts alike. Admittedly, this will be my first year going to Art Basel, but I will be joining friends who have gone for many years.

I am excited to immerse myself in art, culture, design, photography, sculpture, painting and more. I’m so proud to be part of a field of work that prides itself on community, diversity, understanding and passion. I will be arriving in Miami Beach on Friday and I will be keeping my pulse on all the goings-on so that I can bring pictures, videos and interviews with local artists back to this blog! Keep an eye out over the next week – exciting stuff will be happening!

Google Restores my Faith in the Corporate World

Posted by Brittany on November 12, 2010 in Graphic Design

We all know Google is one of the coolest companies to work for, but things just got better when it came to light that they got pretty generous with their employees.

Stories are everywhere online with the news that they gave every single employee a $1,000 bonus and at least a 10% raise for next year. I originally had another post slated for today, but after chewing on this bit of surprising knowledge, I couldn’t help but put my two cents in, and wonder about other creative companies with great benefits.

I consider Google a creative company and while they aren’t exclusive to design, they represent the idea a lot of creative companies have: keep your employees happy; give them great benefits and in turn they will reward you with boosted productivity, less “sick” days and a more positive morale.

James Jeffers: Mention the word Yeti and you’ve got his attention. But seriously, I am obsessed with his work. He has this smashing ability to blend the quaint with the quirky and add a dash of disturbing at the same time. He isn’t afraid of color or juxtaposing modern design with softer, illustrative elements. I seriously had a hard time choosing which pieces of work to include in the blog post, because his diverse range and tack-sharp execution make every piece a success.

Where do I Find a Job?

Posted by Brittany on November 8, 2010 in Graphic Design

Portfolio Job Search Image

Am I the only one struggling to find a job? Nope. At least, I hope not, but based on everything I see in the news, there’s lots of people like me that are wondering why they’re still unemployed. Sure, freelancing is fun, but I’m ready for the excitement of joining a team and making a bigger impact. So many places to find jobs are so saturated with job hunters that it feels impossible to get noticed among the thousands of applicants those job postings may get. So where do you go instead?

Versatility in Design

Posted by Brittany on November 5, 2010 in Graphic Design

Are you a jack of all trades or a master of one?
Last week, while scouring the internet for interesting stuff, I marveled over some incredible illustration work I found at Abduzeedo. On one hand, I was amazed at some of the detailed, ingenious work and on the other hand, I was jealous I couldn’t illustrate as well as those people. At first, it made me feel like I wasn’t an adequate designer because I couldn’t do everything well, but after some time working on things I did like, I realized it’s not important that I do everything well, but that I have a passion for one thing and pursue that with tenacity.

Promote Yourself Before Someone Else Does

Posted by Brittany on October 22, 2010 in Graphic Design

The title at first might sound like a bit of a contradiction; why would I want to do my own promoting when someone else will find me and do it for me? Well, that’s how I used to think, and it wasn’t working out too well when week after frustratingly depressing week, I felt I wasn’t being recognized for my talents. After sitting on my couch, eating cookies and watching Glee, I had an epiphany. I decided to take matters into my own hands and to my delight, it worked, so I figured I’d share that bit of insight here.
